    EXCLUSIVE: David Koma Launches Brand Inspired by the Pirelli Calendar and Playboy Magazine

    LONDON: David Koma never makes difficult choices when making business decisions.

    Along with new collaborators and a childhood friend, the Georgian-born fashion designer has started a swimsuit line called Let’s Swim. This venture is apart from his popular namesake label, which specializes in party dresses and gowns.

    Even though their tones could be similar, Let’s Swim is obviously younger, racier, and sexier.

    The David Koma outerwear items are ribbed and mesh in black and white, while the swimsuit pieces are cutout and slashed in tones of lemony yellow, ocean blue, and red.

    The girls in the commercial photos are drenched in sweat as they play in the sun, emulating the sensual vibe of a Helmut Newton or Lui magazine photo shoot.

    There was an air of nostalgia about it. The famous Playboy magazine issues and the Pirelli calendar were two things I always cherished as a child, the designer remarked in an interview.

    The collection is both a business and a passion effort.

    “I just wanted to keep everything apart from the brand David Koma.” Single product concepts and the idea of deviating entirely from the traditional fashion calendar have always piqued my interest. It’s a fresh approach, and Koma stated, “I wanted to start a company with a whole new team just to have a different experience.”

    He acknowledges his love of travel and vacations. For instance, you can see aquatic themes in his David Koma ready-to-wear designs.

    His spring 2023 collection, which included starfish embroidery and shell patterns laser-cut into tiny black dresses, was motivated by American marine biologist Sylvia Earle and her documentary “Mission Blue.”

    The concept of the swimwear being about being at ease in your own skin appeals to me. According to Koma, being nude and expressing oneself on the beach differs greatly from wearing streetwear or expensive clothing.

    One of the designer’s favorite creatures, the great white shark, is depicted in the silhouette of the brand’s logo.

    Many people are afraid of sharks, despite the fact that they are magnificent, brave creatures. By working with several shark conservation organizations, I hope to shift people’s perceptions and draw attention to this breathtakingly gorgeous animal. According to Koma, they are crucial to the marine ecology.

    Every item in the line is constructed entirely of cotton and recycled plastic from the ocean. Although he doesn’t shout about it, the designer believes that these ecological projects are important because they are something he designs and thinks about.

    Let’s Swim is planning multiple releases this year, with a menswear drop scheduled for later in the year.

    Hedonistic at heart, Koma intends to use the brand to conduct beach takeovers, launch pop-up shops, and throw huge parties in locations like Mykonos, Greece.
